Questions You Should Know about Blue Felt Backing

First and foremost, you’ll want to know who painted your picture. Artists started signing their works around the 15th century, and while their signatures are most commonly on the front, in more recent times they have often been applied to the reverse.

Christie’s specialists can check signatures by looking them up in the artist’s catalogue raisonné — and sometimes even narrow down the date of a work based on the evolution of a signature over time.

Can you cut felt with your Cricut Machines? Why Yes you can! It’s actually quite easy but it helps to master a few tips. Let me help you get started cutting felt with your Cricut.

WHAT TYPE OF FELT IS BEST

Honestly, the best type of felt will be the one that matches your project’s needs. What I mean by this is some projects will require a thicker or stiffer felt to hold up to its outcome.

A felt flower element that will be glued to a greeting card can use a lighter weight, less stiff felt as opposed to the type of felt that 2-year-old Johnny will be flinging around the room before it lands on the storyboard.

The good news is, Cricut has no problems cutting felt providing you choose the right blade and best setting.

TYPES OF FELT

First, it helps to know which Cricut machine you will be using to cut felt.

WHICH CRICUT BLADES FOR CUTTING FELT

• Bonded Fabric Blade – Common blade used for most of the thicknesses of felt
• Deep Cut Blade – Best for the more thicker bonded backed felt
• Fine Point Blade – When I cut Cricut Felt with my Cricut Explore Air 2, I prefer this blade
• Rotary Blade – I can’t say enough…My most FAVORITE blade for felt projects! Only used on Cricut Maker

MY BEST TIPS FOR CUTTING FELT

• My #1 BEST TIP is to place transfer tape onto a blue or green mat, so the sticky side will be facing up. Then take the transfer tape backing sheet off and place your felt onto the transfer tape.

Clear transfer tape placed on Cricut mat. Then place felt on the transfer tape to keep mats clean.

This great tip saves your mat from getting the dreaded felt fuzzies stuck all over it, making you have to clean your mat so soon.

I fell for the “place felt on your pink fabric mat” or even a blue mat but I will never do that again! I actually keep one of my mats for felt only and just leave the transfer tape on it. When I am done cutting felt, I simply put the protective sheet back on my mat.

If I need to use the mat for something else, it’s nothing to quickly remove the transfer sheet.

• Make a test cut first with felt, until you get a feel for the type of felt you use. This is especially important if you are cutting felt with a Cricut Explore Air 2. I will admit it’s a lot easier to cut felt on the Cricut Maker having done both ways multiple times.
• My favorite shape to add to make a test cut is a Star, duplicate the star and make it smaller, then select the two layers and click on slice. This will give you 2 stars to test cut, a large one and a small one. I make my larger one only about 2″. On your project turn off all other layers so when you click on make it, it only cuts the star out.

When the star is done cutting, don’t unload your mat until you check to see if it cut all the way through. If it left some parts of the felt still attached, click on the C or Go button again. This will cut the stars out in the very same place. Now you will know how your project will cut out based on your test cuts. Then simply turn off the star layer and turn back on the rest of your project layers and proceed.

CUTTING FELT WITH A CRICUT MAKER

• Great news! The Cricut Maker cuts Felt beautifully with ease. I use the “Rotary Blade” every time! The only thing to remember is no felt likes to be cut to intricately. (think tiny holes and such) although I do admit the Cricut Maker can cut more intricate cuts than the Cricut Explore Air 2. On my first cut I simply don’t unload the mat without checking my cut first so If I need to, I can have it cut twice. Just be sure to place your felt as I stated above on your mat using transfer paper.

CUTTING FELT WITH CRICUT EXPLORE AIR 2

• Unless using Cricut’s felt, you may need to use some heat and bond before placing on your mat to cut.
• I suggest placing the felt and or bonded felt on the transfer paper that is placed on your mat as stated above, but always do a test cut first or AT LEAST don’t unload your mat before lifting up part of the felt shape to see if it cut all the way through. If it did not, simply click on the C button or Go button again, then check again.

EXTRA TIPS FOR THE CRICUT EXPLORE AIR 2 REFERENCING WHICH BLADES FOR FELT

• Cricut Felt: Use a fine tip blade and place felt on mat with transfer tape on mat first as stated above.
• Craft Felt (not as thick): Iron a backing like heat and bond to the bottom of felt, then use the “bonded fabric blade”
• Thicker Felt: You will need a backer like the Craft Felt and use the “Deep Point Blade”, but please keep in mind sometimes the thicker felts just can’t cut all the way through using the Cricut Explorer Air 2, but at least do some test cuts to be sure.
