It seems that people here believe that atomizers make the cologne smell better than using a splash style. Is this true, or is it just personal preference?

What do we have on a perfume bottle? Mainly perfume (depending on density or ratios of it it will be called Parfum, Eau de Parfum, Eau de Toillete or Eau de Cologne) and alcohol to give a ride to the molecules of parfum.

The function of an atomizer is to break the links between the parfum or spread each molecule as one not a chain of some in your skin. A cloud of parfum will be more intense than a splash because on a cloud all molecules are individuals on air and skin (dispersion effect) and on a splash the superficial resilience of a liquid will impeach the molecules of parfum to evaporate.Only after some time under the influence of your body heat the smell will open because the alchool will volatilize.
Also, how do you apply cologne with an atomizer? I find if it is a strong-smelling cologne, it is too much to just spray it right on my neck, so I have to first spray it on my wrists then rub it on my neck and backs of ears. Is this common? It seems that doing any kind of rubbing action would defeat the purpose of using an atomizer.
The atomizers will spend more perfume than a splash...Why people rub it first on the wrists!? Because it's a well irrigated area, a hot spot of your body heat...the heat will help the corps du parfum to open because the alchool will evaporate. The neck area and backs of ears (such as chest) are too hot spots and they have the same purpose: heating the alchool...the good thing about rubbing is to spread on a larger area all the perfume who permits a nice and constant evaporation of the fragrance.

Other thing about rubbing is not to have the sensation of a cooler little river dropping down to your back or shoulders...a waste of perfume because it's so concentrated it only open 1 or 2 hours after...on your lower back!!! Dispersion is the key...and yes you should rub it because it helps...put a science tube full of parfum and a sheet of cologne and the larger area will be more intense than a small one.

Other thing about atomizers:they protect the content more carefully than a bottle wich you have to open everyday. The oxygen (oxidation by air) and pollution will affect the parfum, if you are a purist.

Not to mention the hands oxidation or acidity skin: if you put it on your palm...well, no one can control the quantity to be used...a waste sometimes, but the skin will not contact the product directly. The finger on the top of bottle will allow, if you have your fingers with garlic scent from that nice dinner 3 nights ago, filthy or a cut on it...it will develop with time debris on the bottom (dead skin cells for instance) or even a new scent all those new scents mixed.

The acidity of your skin can change a nice nose smell into a so so scent when applied on your skin.
