Is it safe to drive a trailer without trailer brakes?

12 Apr.,2024

Thanks

I’m thinking it will be ok - again max weight of trailer is 3k - not the loaded weight. Guessing loaded weight will be below 2k -I mean how much household stuff can you jam in there?

Not like I’m going to use it daily doing this - one trip - go slow/keep space and should be fine - especially since it’s interstate driving and not really stop and go. No - you can’t always tell what some other idiot is going to do - but in an interstate situation and keeping sufficient distance should be fine.

I’d like a dual axle and something bigger - but this is just a price thing for a simple use. Found one at an equipment sale and it’s bid low - I’ll try to get it cheap if I can. If not - no big deal. Eventually will ne getting a car carrier/equipment trailer for moving tractors and such - but this would be nice to haul the 4 wheeler/gator if needed.

Everyone is saying you need trailer brakes. No one is explaining why.

Using a trailer brake controller gives you 2 kinds of additional control.

1-When using a trailer brake setup, when you step on the brakes of your vehicle, the brakes for the vehicle and the trailer both go on, working to slow down or stop all the wheels that are moving.

Imagine in you head if only the 4 tires of the vehicle are slowing down, but the rear tires of the trailer are not. It's like being on a 10-speed bike and only using the brakes on the front wheel. You loose your stability and control, because the front tire can stop but the back tire keeps on rolling. If you had to rely on this setup to stop, it would drastically change how you drove. Because your stopping distance would be so different. Same idea with the tow vehicle and a trailer that is heavier than something like a small lawn mowing trailer with minimal weight. This is one reason that states have a legal trailer weight limit for requiring the brakes. So you can stop safely.

2-More unique to towing. Using a trailer brake controller allows you to turn on ONLY the trailer brake without stepping on the vehicle brake pedal. Why would you need to do this?
If you are driving down a mountain, due to acceleration, you don't want the trailer gaining on the vehicle and to be "pushing" the vehicle along. In this situation you will apply the trailer brake only as your drive, to back off the trailer from gaining on the vehicle. This keeps you out of danger for losing control or going into a sway.

Once you get it, you will understand why you want this. And you will start to notice other drivers around town that may not be set up correctly (like the yard guy with too much weight in their trailer, or a car with a small U Haul trailer). Once you "know" these drivers can't control their rigs, you give them a wide berth.
